Scotland: To Do List

It's official. I am going to Scotland. I made my flight reservations on Tuesday. While this is not undoable it pretty well sets everything in concrete. It makes what we have all been avoiding a reality. My plane leaves August 1st, and I won't be back for three weeks. I have spent plenty of time crying about leaving home before. I am not going to do that today. Maybe later we can revisit the whole travelling with a family angle. Today I am keeping it fun. Below is my list of things that I want to do while in Scotland. I am sure I will come up with some others, but for now here is my top ten list.
  1. Drink a beer in a local pub. You could call this a dream of mine.
  2. Eat Haggis.
  3. Get a picture of that damn Loch Ness Monster.
  4. See a castle.
  5. Laugh at a guy wearing a kilt.
  6. Find the perfect place and time to recite the line, "They may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!!!!"
  7. Find out why it is called Scotch tape rather than Scottish tape.
  8. Listen in on some live bagpipe music.
  9. Use the term lassie properly in a sentence not referring to a television collie.
  10. Talk up a local about his feelings on William Wallace.

You are a braver man than I. I'd totally skip the Haggis and head for the Highlands. And if you pull off the William Wallace imitation there had better be video of it on this blog when you return. Maybe you can befriend a misplaced Irishman named Steven as well :) Safe travels.

I'd give haggis a go. Hell, if you are going to eat it anywhere, Scotland is the place to do it! Other than that, sun rise is about 4:30am and sunset is about 10:30pm. Love those short nights!

way to look on the brightside. and think of how many people would love to go there and never have the chance. *ahem*

Scotland and Ireland are about the only places I'd willingly go visit. So have a blast.

Also, I've been singing that song "The Scotsman" to my son ever since he was a zygote. As soon as I found MJ was pregnant I sang that song damn near every night. He still loves it!

Sounds like a great time. Just make sure that if you laugh at a guy wearing a kilt he's had WAY more beer to drink than you :-)

Haggis sounds really really bad! I have heard it described before! I hope you enjoy your trip!

Haggis is great... you will love it. Have it with boiled turnip and mashed potato and wash it down with a quality single malt...
Lots of castles to choose from... the place is overrun with them. Just make sure that if you go to the capital you call it Edin-bu-ru and not what so many Americans call it Edin-bow-row...
As long as you declare that you have a healthy dislike of the English you will always have a warm welcome anywhere in Scotland.

Great list! I would totally skip the Haggis though. And if you do the movie quote will you be in full kilt and make-up? A picture of that would definitely draw blog readers!
