Our Baby is Growing Up Too Fast

Braden is growing up faster than I can track. Every day he is on to new skills and adventures. He has transformed from crawler to full time walker in the past week. Now when I am looking for him I have to raise my gaze to a few feet off the floor rather than scouring the hardwood for the little guy.

He continues to eat more and more foods. He often eats at the table with Mommy and Daddy these days. He loves to drink water from his sippy cup. I am using love here in the way that Pooh loves honey or Norm loves beer. He gets a little juice from time to time which he obviously likes as well. He has nearly completed his metamorphosis from baby to one year old. I can hardly believe it.

This morning Braden practiced one of his new favorite skills. That skill is pointing. When kids are older you will hear many a parent say don't point. Pointing is rude. But for a baby it is an important step in communication. Braden constantly points at things he wants. For those of you who have forgot babies want everything. He points at the lights, the fan, the pictures on the wall. He points at toys out of his reach, food he wants, and even toothbrushes by the sink. Last night I was reading him a book when he started pointing at his bookshelf.

I am not sure if this means he was enjoying reading time and he wanted more books, or he wanted me to shut up and put the book back where it belongs. Until he can talk I will be optimistic and assume he only means nice things.

Now to the pointing story that started this discussion. Most mornings I feed Braden a bottle when he wakes up around 7:30. After his bottle I put him back to bed before I go to work. This morning I tried to hold him for a little while before putting him back to bed. He kept struggling to get away. He struggled and turned around while standing on my lap. I figured he wanted down, and I would have to take him back to bed right away. Then as he turned around he pointed to his stuffed monkey laying on the ottoman. I gave him the monkey. He hugged it tight and laid down on my chest. We sat like that for a few minutes in the dark. It was a wonderful moment that I will never forget.

These type moments are the ones that Arica and I are trying to cherish every day because our baby is growing up too fast.

How sweet. I love those moments, and it seems like the older and more independent they get, the less those moments happen. It's so sad yet amazing to watch these little guys grow up.

Although I miss holding such a beautiful little baby in my arms, I just love to be able to see all the cool things he does now and how he is learning new things all the time, he is such a fun little man and we might not get to rock him to sleep anymore and hold him all the time but we do still get kisses and hugs from him which is always a good thing. By the way another thing he does is move our arms away when we try to help him, I believe we have an independent little guy on our hands

They have a tendency to do that growing thing, unfortunately. This was a very sweet post.

Awwwwww! I don't have kids but I had something similar happen with my niece. I was overwhelmed with such love that I used that memory to help me keep my blood pressure low(er) when the doc was taking it.

Did he point at a beer that he would like you to pop open for him??

Time does fly by, and the sad part is that you never get it back again. I like to take a lot of video.

No redneck comments! Most of my family are rednecks! I myself, was born in West Point Mississippi, and all of my Mother's family, including my Mom, reside in Mississippi. I was the only kid that I knew in NJ that had gravy and biscuits for breakfast!:)

Yes, they do grow up fast. I know that first hand. 18 and 15 years have gone by in a blink of an eye. There are some days that I wish I could hold the oldest or the youngest on my lap in the dark and enjoy snuggling together. Sometimes, I really miss those days. Your post touched me and made me a bit melancholy. As much as I love my girls, sometimes I do want those little toddlers back, just for a little while. No matter how tightly you hold on, they do grow up and away. I'm glad you are enjoying these precious moments.

Bea is point and signing and it's all so friggin' amazing. She's 1 and change now and I love chasing her around the room on my hands and knees while she squeals.

Wonderful post. We need more fathers who embrace the love of their children.

That is a fun time when they really start exploring their little world. It really got us when our little man wanted to get down and wouldn't stay in our arms anymore. However, even though he'd rather be running around or terrorizing the cat, he's started giving real hugs where he wraps his arm around your neck and hangs on tight. That is such a good feeling.
